DePaul Blue Demons
The DePaul Blue Demons are the NCAA Division I men’s basketball program for DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. The team competes in the Big East Conference.
DePaul has a history of producing a number of notable players, including George Mikan, who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959, made the 25th and 35th NBA Anniversary Teams of 1970 and 1980, and was elected one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players ever in 1996.
In addition to basketball, the Blue Demons compete in numerous other sports as well. Their women’s softball team, for example, has played in the Women’s College World Series four times, making them one of only six Division I women’s baseball teams to do so.

The Blue Demons have played their home games at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois for 37 years until the team moved to Wintrust Arena in downtown Chicago in 2017. They have been led by coach Dave Leitao since 2015, but fame came before that under Ray Meyer.
There have been several highs and lows during the Blue Demons’ history. The team won its first Big East Conference tournament in 2011 and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament three times.
DePaul Athletics
DePaul University is home to a number of competitive athletic programs. In addition to its varsity basketball program, the school fields an impressive men’s and women’s soccer team as well as a women’s rowing squad. Other notable teams include the varsity volleyball, women’s lacrosse and men’s ice hockey clubs.
The Blue Demons are not known for their football program, but they have had a strong tradition in the sport. A few noteworthy accomplishments include winning the Big East tournament in 2005 and making the postseason in 2011. Meanwhile, UCLA was also a perennial contender. In fact, they had won the championship the year before, and they were the number-one seed in the West.
But the big story of that day was the performance of the three core players who had anchored the team’s offense throughout the year–Gary Garland, Curtis Watkins and Mark Aguirre. Each of them scored 24 points on an impressive 8-of-13 shooting night, and the three combined to shoot 55 percent.
